As part of my healthy lifestyle, I have worked on cleaning up my products for the past several years to minimize the number of toxins I’m exposed to on a daily basis. During pregnancy, I read that toxins can actually be found in the umbilical cord blood of newborn babies, so I became even more vigilant about avoiding toxic products (see more about that in this post). I always imagined that my baby would be born totally pure, having never been exposed to the toxins of the world. I viewed my baby as a clean slate, and I wanted to keep her slate clean for as long as possible in order to ensure her the healthiest life I possibly could.
So, when it came time to build my baby registry, I spent a TON of time researching baby products. I wanted products that were nontoxic but also useful and effective. Here is a list of my favorite baby registry products, most of which are nontoxic:
Caboo Wipes: I’ve tried lots of wipes and these are my favorite! They are made of nontoxic bamboo, they’re thick, and they have ridges to help clean up the mess. For a less expensive (though thinner) alternative to Caboo Wipes, check out Pura wipes—they’re EWG-verified!
Pura Diapers: I have also tried quite a few diaper brands and this is my favorite as of now. Lots of nontoxic diaper brands are sadly starting to add a little chlorine to their diapers, so continue to check the ingredients as these things do change over time. However, at the time of this post, Pura diapers are still totally chlorine free, fragrance free, EWG-verified, and they’re so soft and absorbent! Note: Walmart has good sales on Pura Diapers.
Keekaroo Peanut Changer: This is made in the USA and is super easy to clean—just wipe it clean (with a nontoxic cleaner, of course!)! It’s also BPA-, PVC-, latex-, and phthalate-free. We also tried the Skip Hop changing pad but this one is way more cushy and comfortable.
Everyone 3-in-1 Kids Soap: This is a body wash, shampoo, and bubble bath all in one! We’ve tried a few baby washes and this is my favorite. It’s EWG-verified and fragrance free, but still smells nice.
Burt’s Bees Sleep & Plays: These are my favorite brand of baby clothes! These pajamas all use zippers (side note: do NOT get pajamas with snaps—they are not fun at 3 AM or any other time, really), and they’re super soft and made with 100% organic cotton. They do run a little large, but they also come in preemie size.
Burt’s Bees Organic Onesies: You can never have too many onesies, as there will be poop explosions and other stains on the regular. Trust me and stock up.
Burt’s Bees Beekeeper Wearable Blanket: We bought one of these when we were having issues with the heat in our bedroom, and we ended up discovering that they helped Isla’s sleep overall. These are a thick, soft, 100% organic cotton and I think the extra bit of weight helps her sleep, plus it’s a positive sleep association (i.e., we put it on her for every nap and nighttime sleep so she knows it’s time to go to sleep). These are a great blanket alternative for tiny babies.
Burt’s Bees Quilted Booties: These are very similar to Zutano booties but they’re nontoxic and less expensive! They’re awesome because they’re warm and soft and stay on really well. These are also made from 100% organic cotton.
Burt’s Bees Baby Socks: These socks are amazing! Most baby socks come off so easily but these stay on really well and, like all Burt's Bees clothing, they are organic.
Burt’s Bees Bunting Suit: These are a must for taking baby out in cooler months. They are made from 100% organic cotton and they have the little built-in mittens and hood.
Bonoch MegaView Baby Monitor: This monitor has worked really well for us and is less expensive than the most popular monitor out there. It’s great because it uses radio transmissions (rather than wifi or Bluetooth), emitting fewer EMFs. This is the monitor we had originally, which likely emits even fewer EMFs, but you won’t have the ability to see your baby.
Night Light: The night light we have doesn’t seem to be available anymore, but this one is super similar. It’s rechargeable (and we only charge it every few weeks), it dims, and you can use either warm or cool light. It’s also pretty silent to use because you just tap it to turn it on and off. We love it for nighttime diaper changes.
NUK Orthodontic Pacifiers: We chose these pacifiers for Leo because the orthodontic shape (rather than the round, bulb shape of many pacifiers) is supposed to be better for the development of the baby’s palate. He liked them, and they are BPA free.
Infant Tummy Relief: This seems to soothe my kids’ tummies when they have digestive trouble. I still give it to them as toddlers!
Teeth Tamer: This has really calmed Leo through his teething. It’s a very gentle teething remedy I use as a go-to and it often does the trick. This is also a good natural remedy if they have one red cheek, and this is a good one if they are very clingy!
Nuna RAVA Convertible Carseat: I did a lot of research on carseats, and this is one of the best nontoxic options out there. It does not contain harmful flame retardants (but is still flame resistant!), and is an investment as you can use it from birth to 65 lbs! This thing is very well-made and pretty simple to install. We got a Maxi-Cosi Pria for Leo to save a little money and I can tell you that it was not worth it, as the straps lock up frequently and are just an overall pain. Keep an eye out for the Nuna RAVA during the Nordstrom annual sale.
Boppy ComfyFit Baby Carrier: I LOVE this carrier. It is insanely comfortable and so easy to put on. It’s really best for newborns and lighter babies because it’s pretty stretchy.
Lillebaby Complete All Seasons Carrier: This is a great structured carrier that I still use for my 19-month-old Leo. It has great head support for little babies and adjusts as babies get bigger. Plus, the front flap unzips to reveal a breathable mesh layer for warmer weather. You can wear it on the front or back (when baby is older), and it’s machine-washable.
BOB Jogging Stroller: I preferred to wear Isla as a newborn so I didn’t use the regular stroller that much, but I love the BOB jogging strollers. They ride so smooth, they recline flat, they turn on a dime, and they are obviously great for running with baby. Once we had Leo, I went straight for the double BOB and use it all the time. I actually got both of my BOBs on Facebook Marketplace, so check there for a deal!
Winter Toddler Bunting Bag: Both of my babies have LOVED these for stroller rides in cooler weather! They are so cozy and pretty easy to use, and Isla still fits in her at age 3. I’ve never tried them with a car seat.
Phillips Avent Natural Glass Baby Bottles: Did you know that the toxic chemicals in plastic leeches into your food? I certainly didn’t want any chemicals leeching into my breastmilk, so I went with glass bottles instead of plastic. These are great, and Isla didn’t have any trouble getting used to them.
Junobie Breastmilk Storage Bags: These are great for storing breastmilk if you want to avoid using those little plastic storage baggies. You can reuse them over and over, and write the date directly on them in pen! They seal very well, too.
Flannel Cloth Baby Wipes: These are actually cloth wipes, but I only ever used them to clean my babies’ faces once they started solids, and I still use them today! They’re so soft and thin but they have lasted me a couple of years.
Dohm White Noise Machine: The original white noise machine! While most white noise machines play a recording of white noise, this machine actually uses a little fan inside to make true white noise. It has two volumes and is made in the USA. Just make sure that the sound of the white noise is under 45 decibels wherever baby is sleeping to avoid any hearing damage. You can use this app to check.
Travel Lite Crib with Stages: Originally, we got what was likely the least toxic bassinet on the market at the time (the Guava Lotus) and both of my babies hated it because the mattress was stiff as a board and the travel crib mattress doesn’t lay flat. We ended up using a hand-me-down bassinet from Graco, and my babies loved it. It’s not necessarily the least toxic option, but you can pair it with a nontoxic mattress protector and organic sheets to help protect baby (or get it used so it has already had time to off-gas).
Aden 4-in-1 Convertible Mini-Crib: Because this crib is convertible, you can use it until your child moves into a bed (depending on their size). It is Greenguard Gold certified and has worked well for us! We use it with this organic mattress and these organic sheets. Make sure to use a mattress protector, too (trust me!).
Burt’s Bees Reversible Blanket: Ok, I know I sound like a broken record with all of my Burt’s Bees recommendations, but this blanket is so soft and the perfect weight. Grab this for when your baby turns one.
Silverette Nursing Cups: These are worth the hype! Nursing Isla was pretty painful for the first year (due to undiagnosed oral ties), and these nursing cups combined with a little coconut oil really helped my sore and cracked nipples. Silver is naturally antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal, plus honestly so soothing.
Nursing Bras: Boy, have I gotten my money out of these! I am a little embarrassed to admit I have been wearing these same bras for about 3.5 years, buy they’ve held up really well and are super comfortable.
Nursing Camis: I live in these in the warmer months, and they’re great for layering so you can breastfeed without exposing your stomach. I’ve tried a few brands but Old Navy is my favorite.
A note on pack-n-plays, swings, etc.: I don’t really have recommendations for these because we didn’t use them very much! We chose to baby proof the house and keep our babies out of containers as much as possible, but that’s just a personal preference. Don’t feel like you need ALL of the things on the market. You can always ask for Amazon gift cards and order things once you get to know your baby and find your groove as a parent.
I hope that this list will help you build your own nontoxic baby registry to help you start your little one’s health off on the right foot!
